The Sergeant Thing: Chapter 7

Inkorporeals

Chapter 7 of my Adam-12 fan fiction story! You can find Chapter 1 here.

Reed caught Malloy’s eye and swallowed a couple of times, then turned his back.

Malloy knew how he felt; he also was sickened to be stuck in the middle of this. It was one thing to tangle with bad guys; you didn’t know their story. Nothing could excuse them, but at least you could assume a weakness, something to lessen their evil. With your own brothers, though… What could you do with that? One dirty cop made you realize you’re not as safe as you thought. You’re not as clean…

Malloy shook his head. It made you think too much. “Jim,” he said, “we’ve got to play it cool.”

“Cool?” Reed said. “This?” He gestured with his head to Bobby, whose lips were moving without sound. “One of us did this! That means we’ve…

Malloy turned to look across the aisle. “How ya doing, Partner?”

Reed’s cuffs jangled as he slid them up and down the pole. “Beats me. Looks solid.”

“Yeah,” Malloy said. “Mine, too.”

A sob came from his right, and Malloy looked down at Bobby. He hadn’t moved since the men had left. “I’m sorry,” the boy whispered. “I’m so sorry. But he’s right; I need you. Someone needs to be here for my sister.”

“Hey,” Reed said, “we’re going to do the best we can.” He said it as though that would certainly be enough. It always had been before… “What’s your sister’s name?”

Bobby sighed. His right hand came up to wipe his face. “Margaret. Margaret Hillesphry. She’s just visiting me from home.”

“Where’s home?” Reed asked.

“Inverness-shire, Scotland. It’s where my parents live.”…

Inkorporeals

The shelves blocked out almost all light, but Malloy made the kid as well as he could; he was stretched out on the concrete floor, about six feet in length, a light, checked shirt and blue jeans, 150 pounds, nineteen or twenty, and shining, curly hair. His eyes were shut, and a trail of tears ran down to his ear.

Blood spotted the right leg of his jeans. A wound from his hip bled through his shirt, but it was his left hand that drew Malloy’s gaze; it was spread over his stomach, rising and falling with each painful breath. It was covered in thick, bright red.

“Okay,” Will said. “Malloy, put your hands on your head and get on your knees by Bobby here. He’s gonna help us out.”

Bobby’s eyes opened, and he…

Malloy straightened up, holding his hands far out from his sides, and turned to face the speaker.

A man (late-forties, wearing a blue serviceman jumper, brown eyes, about 6’3″ and 240 pounds) stood behind and to the left of Reed, eyes and shotgun trained on the younger officer’s back. Small leaves stippled green in his gray-black hair; he’d crawled through the bushes to knock Reed’s gun from his hands. His eyes flicked to Malloy. “Hands high, where I can see them.”

Malloy obeyed.

Then the guy glared at Reed again and called, “Jus? You okay?”

The man on the ground behind Malloy grunted. “Yeah. I guess so.”

“Stay out of reach of our officer friends. We don’t want them to think they can try anything.”

“Right.”

The man beside Reed continued. “Think you can get…

Just then a flash in one of the warehouses caught Malloy’s eye. He lifted his foot off the accelerator, and the car dropped from thirty-five to thirty and kept slowing.

“What’s up?” Reed said.

“I’m not sure. That warehouse there.” Malloy eyed a large, gray building with dark windows about a hundred yards ahead and to the left. “I thought I saw lights for a second. Big lights.” He shook his head. “But it might have been the sun.”

Reed nodded. “I’ll call it in.” He took up the microphone, but waited. The dispatcher was giving a list of stolen items and the descriptions of three 459 suspects who had all taken off in different vehicles.

Malloy pulled over and squinted across the street at the warehouse. No more lights flashed in the building. He’d…

Out of the corner of his eye, Malloy saw Reed watching him. It had been a long morning, and the sun was just coming over the hill–about 6:30. Patrol had taken them down by the wharfs, and large warehouses lined the road on the left. Since it was Sunday, no one was working; they had the street to themselves.

Jim Reed (left) and Pete Malloy (right)

The partners hadn’t talked much between calls. Malloy’s anger had diminished with the darkness, leaving an empty feeling in his chest. “Hey, Partner,” he said. “How do you feel about Seven?”

Reed was always enthusiastic for food. “Great! Where?”

“I don’t know. Wanna try The Brink?”

“Sure.” Reed picked up the microphone. “One-Adam-Twelve requesting Code Seven at Loughlin and Fillmore.”

After a couple of seconds, the response came. “One-Adam-Twelve…

The Sergeant Thing: Chapter 1

Chapter 1 of a longer fan fiction story I wrote some years ago. Enjoy!

Inkorporeals

An Adam-12 fan fiction story: A while back, I watched the whole series from the 1960’s-70’s. Great fun! Writing this story was an exercise in everything but characterization, since those were already given. A new chapter will come out every Tuesday. I hope you enjoy!

“What’s up, Mac?” Malloy stepped into the Watch Commander’s office and let the door swing shut behind him.

Sergeant William “Mac” MacDonald

Mac looked up from skimming a report and gestured to the seat across from him. “Sit down, Pete.” Malloy took the chair, and Mac set his papers aside. “You may have noticed we’re stretched thin lately…” His voice trailed off, and he started again. “I guess there’s no easy way to ask this.” He squinted. “Do you think Reed could handle a beat?”

Malloy blinked. “Without me?”

Mac nodded, and his strange, blue eyes bored into the other officer’s.

Malloy sat back in…

3 AM Friend – Inkandescence

A friend has posted a story on Inkorporeals! Take a look! 🙂

Inkorporeals

It was 3 AM, and she was awake. Again.

She had tried everything: warm milk, herbal teas, medicine – natural and pharmaceutical, staying off her phone and computer, a new pillow, calming music, cold baths, hot baths. Despite everything, it was 3 AM and she was awake again.

She sighed and sat up in bed, running a hand through her short hair. She knew that in an hour or so she would likely be asleep again. What did one do for an hour in the middle of the night?

She could work — there was always more work to do — but that might stimulate her brain and keep her awake longer. She had the same worries about reading or watching anything. She didn’t want to be awake. She wanted every one of her few hours of unconsciousness. She thought enough as it was, she didn’t need to be thinking…

Nicodemus

I’m starting a blog for friends to post anonymous stories. Enjoy!

Inkorporeals

“What do you read?”

The reverie was broken. Nicodemus blinked. The piercing brightness of the desert valley became the cool brightness of the morning through the colonnade. The written word–which had translated seamlessly from the scroll in his hand to the image in his mind–became the spoken word. The voice of the Lord became the voice of the boy standing before him.

Nicodemus returned to the world where the people of the Lord were yet dead. They lay in tombs of exhausted hope, the earth in which they were buried cracked for lack of living water.

The Temple was filled with the motion of the people, but for many days, it had seemed still and airless to him. He couldn’t even bring himself to come every day anymore. Tears gathered in his eyes. He pressed his lips together and breathed in the lifeless air.

The boy smiled. He asked again…
